In the seventies I was, like many others, very active with wool, coloring and spinning it and again knitting. Not long after our first Icelandic horse had arrived, it was of course necessary to make Icelandic sweaters. I bought some Icelandic wool, a book with models and patterns and started knitting. I never used a circular needle before with which you go around and around at one time. It takes some time before you get used to this because you can't "hold a needle under your arm". The knitting of such sweaters goes fast because of the 6 mm needles and thick wool. At the moment of starting the yoke, there are the front, the back and the sleeves on the needle with more then 232 stitches. It almost seems there's no end, but after some decreases and 40 tours further, only about 90 stitches remain and the sweater is almost finished. In this way I made several sweaters with different patterns. They are nice thick and warm. Later on I have made sweaters using a thinner Icelandic wool, which results in a lighter sweater. It's also nice to make smaller things like caps and mittens. Especially with the gloves I do a lot and they are all made with two or more colors. The technique is based on former and traditional Scandinavian and Estonian patterns. I knit them with fine needles and wool but because I use two yarns at the same time, they will be very strong. On the next pages you will find some pictures of my work. I also have mentioned the prices (exclusive forwarding-charges).
